Design vs Cost - websites

How much is a static personal package?

A static personal web design package
is worth 12,000 Pesos
and is done in 6 days.

Calculating the Cost

This is one and perhaps the most asked question
when thinking about engaging a freelancer or a design agency for a web design project. How to know the actual total cost before jumping into a contract and the details behind why the actual amount is reached? Well in this document, ecdisenyo sheds a little light on how to know beforehand how much you’ll need for a web design package with ecdisenyo. By knowing what goes into the design, the more important matter and perhaps more realistic goal is reached – how can the designer and the client work better as a team to bring more value out of the web design service.

Let’s take for example the most basic web design package offered by
ecdisenyo. This is the Static Personal Website Package. On paper this package specifications includes:

  • standard pages of Home Page, About Us, and Contact Us
  • minimum of 3 article pages
  • a logo if the client does not have one
  • simple theme and custom template for the client
  • design in Website X5 Evolution 8 and MyLogo Maker Professional v2.0
  • no video editing, but upload to Youtube and linking to videos there
  • free digital capture of images right off the clients business place (offered only in limited areas)
  • allows for one revision
  • a total of 24 billable hours spanning 6 business days (4 billable hours in a business day)

At initial glance, there are two obvious points the reader should have taken notice. First, the whole package seems to refer only to a total of 6 web pages. Pretty small isn’t it, though it seems to be a common norm for some websites and often referred to as a brochure website. Second, the whole package service consists of only 24 hours, period. This either seems to be too short to get a decent website off or too long for a simple website of 6 pages! We’ll see later whether this 24 hrs is too short or too long.

Is it only for six web pages?

The guaranteed 6 web pages is just a minimum.

Clients can help to get as many web pages up online.

On second glance, the reader should be able to deduce two important points from the package. First, if the total for the whole package is a fixed 24 billable hours then for a 500/hr rate that would mean 12,000 Pesos as the cost for the whole package. Second, the whole design service is a good 6 business days so if the client makes a lighting quick review of the first draft and add little modification requests to it, the web site should be running in 6 days time. Assuming the client does not avail of any more of the special features or add another revision on top of the included one revision, can they then conclude as follows?

  • 12,000 Pesos
  • 6 business days
  • 6 web pages

Is that the real cost of the web design service ( price, time, value)? The answer is yes and no. Yes, because that
can be the expected cost – and value of the web design service. No, because the web design service can actually churn out more web pages. Yup, by working hand in hand, the designer and the client can actually add as many pages as they can within the 24 hour period. By doing so, the actual value of the web design service is increased while still maintaining a fixed cost to get that higher value. If the client can provide so much information on itself and help out providing articles for its own, the 24 hours won’t look too short or long for that matter. It simply looks just right on target.

* The payment for domain registration and hosting plans are separate of the design services. See PhilHosting and BlueHost for current hosting plans and domain registration fees. The client can opt to use other hosting plans or utilize their own servers.
